Officials say students from kindergarten through 12th grade will soon be able to enroll for fare cards online and renew their passes at a Metro station.

Previously, students were required to get an application from their school, take it to a division of the District's Department of Transportation and then go to a Metro sales office.

The all-purpose card, called the D.C. One Card, already gives students access to D.C. government programs, facilities, recreation centers and libraries. The new process for getting reduced fares will be rolled out to schools in phases beginning in the fall.
