The District of Columbia has been added to the list of domestic areas that are under federal quarantine for an invasive wood-boring beetle.

The beetle, called emerald ash borer or Agrilus planipennis, is native to China and eastern Asia. It destroys the tissues under the bark and can kill ash trees. The beetle can travel with firewood or other wood products moved along interstates, which is why the District was added to the list of quarantine states.

The movement of firewood of all hardwood species, nursery stock, green lumber, waste, compost and chips of ash species is regulated under the quarantine.
