WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray says the district is sponsoring several events in observance of the Sept. 11 attacks to honor those who lost their lives and to recognize the commitment of first responders.

The three-day observance will include school programs on Sept. 9 that promote peace and tolerance. On Sept. 10, children from across the district will toss white rose petals into the Potomac River at Hains Point to honor those who lost their lives in the attacks.

A tribute will be held on Sept. 11 at Freedom Plaza to rekindle the spirit of service that followed the attacks, followed by an evening candlelight service at the First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, DC.
