Former National Guardsman Bret Desmarteau pleads guilty to possessing child porn
A former National Guardsman pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced.
Bret W. Desmarteau, 30, formerly of Odenton, Md, pleaded guilty Wednesday. The FBI found hundreds of pictures of child pornography on his computer, and traced profiles used on a site to trade images of child pornography back to Desmarteu’s address, authorities said.
Undercover agents looked through the pictures shared and downloaded on profiles on a website used to trade and download child porn. They found images of boys engaged in sexually explicit conduct. They traced the IP address of the computer used to access the account to an address in Odenton.
A different undercover agent also downloaded pictures and videos from one of Desmarteau's profiles in January 2010. They agent discovered the profile had been accessed from Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. Authorities say Desmarteau traveled there at that time to participate in military training.
Desmarteau’s house and computer were searched in April 2010 by the FBI, which found numerous files of child pornography. The investigation also revealed that Desmarteau traded child pornography with an undercover agent in Canada prior to the search.
Desmarteau faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison followed by up to lifetime of supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for October 13. Desmarteau must register as a sex offender.
