Getaway driver found guilty in 08 bank robbery

A man who served as the getaway driver for a bank robbery in D.C. in 2008 was found guilty Tuesday.

Edward Weary, 53, of Glen Burnie, Md., plead guilty to acting as an accessory, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. stated in a news release.

On Sept. 18, 2008, Weary met Derrick Benson and an accomplice and agreed to serve as the getaway driver in a bank robbery. He then drove Benson and the accomplice to a PNC Bank in the 600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE.

Weary waited in the car as Benson stood as a lookout and the accomplice went inside the bank. The accomplice handed a note to an employee demanding money. They took approximately $64,080 before returning to the car and escaping.

Benson, 34, of Washington D.C., was found guilty and sentenced in March 2011 to more than eight years in prison.

Weary faces a maximum sentence of ten years in prison and a $125,000 fine. His sentencing is slated for November.
