Man arrested when armed robbery went awry
A foiled armed robbery left a would-be robber in bad shape, according to police.
Darius Cameron, 26, of Glen Burnie was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault, armed robbery, robbery and varios weapon charges.
On Friday at 9:20 p.m., Cameron allegedly entered a grocery store in the 1900 block of Fairfax Road in Annapolis, according to a news release from Annapolis police.
As he walked through the aisles, he covered his face and took out a hand gun. He approached the counter, pointed the gun at the clerks and demanded money in the register.
A clerk activated a panic alarm and didn't comply. Cameron then climbed on top of the counter and continued to demand money. When the clerk refused to comply, Cameron tried to shoot the clerk, but the gun did not work.
He jumped down to the other side of the counter and dropped his gun. A fight ensued over the weapon and other employees hit him with various items in the store. The employees then chased Cameron around the store until police arrived.
Cameron suffered cuts to his head and body and was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma for precautionary purposes, the release said. One employee suffered minor cuts.
Cameron is being held without bail.
