Man jumps White House fence, apprehended by Secret Service
Updated: August 3, 2011 - 06:15 pm
(AP, ABC7) - The man who jumped a fence at the White House appeared in D.C. Superior Court Wednesday, where he was quiet.
James Dirk Crudup, 41, is facing two charges of contempt and one count of unlawful entry. The Secret Service apprehended him Tuesday night after he climbed over the White House fence.
Crudup was very quiet and looked down at the floor during Wednesday's court appearance.
A Secret Service spokesperson says he is homeless.
Authorities are holding Crudup in jail until his next court appearance. No date has been set.
Carrying a bag with unidentified contents, Crudup jumped the fence around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday and ran onto the north lawn.
Spokesman Ed Donovan says he was immediately taken into custody Tuesday evening by Secret Service agents who guard the White House complex around the clock.
Authorities say this isn’t the first time Crudup has tried something like this.
The man had a backpack with him, and Donovan says it was being examined for possible explosive material. Officials told ABC7 that bomb technicians from the D.C. fire department are among the authorities investigating the bag.
President Barack Obama was believed to be in the White House at the time.
