WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro says it is adding a three-person team to its communication staff to provide alerts to riders about bus service problems.

Spokesman Dan Stessel tells The Washington Examiner that the team will work out of the agency's bus operations center in Prince George's County, Md. The group will sit with dispatchers and cameras to find out what is happening with buses out on the road.

Train riders can already sign up for alerts that let them know about delays on specific lines. Metro, however, at times has more than 1,200 buses on the roads.

Stessel says the new alert system will at first be only active on weekdays. He says Metro hopes to have the system running by the end of the year.
