A man is dead and another arrested following a fight over a broom in Capitol Heights on Monday.
At about 5:20 p.m., Prince George's County Police responded to the 4700 block of Leroy Gorham Drive for a report of a shooting. Officers found Norman Wood, III, of the 800 block of 51st Street N.E. in D.C. lying in the street and suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Wood was mowing a lawn in the neighborhood and had the broom with him, police said. At one point, he put the broom down near the trash.
A taxi driver, identified as Michael Ricardo Cruz, 55, picked up the broom. A fight ensued between the two men and Cruz shot Wood before fleeing the scene.
Cruz, 55, of the 44000 block of Blackistone Circle in Hollywood, Md. was arrested a short time later by responding officers. A handgun was recovered from the vehicle.
Cruz is being held at the Department of Corrections. He is charged with murder.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (301) 772-4925.
