"Your odds of being involved in a fatal crash are greater in August than in any other month of the year," said John Townsend II, a AAA spokesman. "More people are on the roads in August and they travel greater distances, increasing their chances of being involved in a fatal crash."

The trend of increased road fatalities during August dates back to 1995, Townsend said.

Fatal accidents this month include:

-Two people were killed on the Capitol Beltway in a six-car crash near Forestville, Maryland during morning rush hour on August 2. The crash left two others injured, as well.

-A teen was killed in a dirt bike crash when he was struck by a tractor trailer on Florida Avenue in Northeast Washington on August 2.

-Two women were killed in a head-on collision on Route 5 along Point Lookout Road in St. Mary's County, Maryland on August 5.

-A truck driver was killed in a tractor-trailer crash on the northbound lanes of I-95 near the Lorton exit, near Fairfax County on August 6.

-Three people were killed in a three-vehicle crash near Backlick Road and Fullerton Road on August 10.

In the Washington metro area, the annual cost of traffic crashes is just above $5 billion, according to a news release from AAA Mid-Atlantic.
