ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Census data shows that people from El Salvador comprise more than a quarter of Maryland's Hispanic population.

Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday shows there are 123,789 people from the Central American nation who now live in Maryland.

They represent 2.1 percent of the state's population, or 123,789 people. Hispanics comprise about 8.2 percent of Maryland's population, a total of 470,632.

The 2010 census says people from Mexico make up the second largest group of the state's Hispanic population, with about 88,000 people or about 1.5 percent of the state's total population.

The census shows Maryland's population grew by about 477,000 between 2000 and 2010. More than half of the state's population growth resulted from increases in the Hispanic population.
