Obama officials to survey Hurricane Irene damage
(WJLA, AP) - Top officials from the Obama administration are traveling to Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia to get a first-hand look at damages caused by Hurricane Irene.
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano is scheduled to join U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Tuesday to survey crop damage during an aerial tour of Tyrrell County. They are set to meet first in Elizabeth City.
A statement from the Department of Homeland Security sais Napolitano and Vilsack will receive a briefing at the emergency operations center and hold a news conference at 1:30 p.m. at the Dare County Administration Building in Manteo.
Napolitano and Vilsack are also scheduled to visit Richmond, Va. to tour the state's EOC and meet with local officials, first responders and volunteers. A news conference is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at the Virginia Emergency Operations Center.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate will travel to Vermont, where he meet up with Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch in Burlington, Vt. for a helicopter tour of the storm damaged areas there. Fugate will also meet with additional state and local officials working on the response and recovery efforts. A news conference will be held at 4 p.m. at the Burlington International Airport.
FEMA Deputy Administrator Rich Serino will make a stop in Hartford, Connecticut and New Jersey.
