ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - First and last, the Washington Redskins kicking competition will be all about the Grahams.
Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that free agent Shayne Graham will be signed to go toe-to-toe with Graham Gano for the job.
Graham is the third most accurate kicker in NFL history, behind Nate Kaeding and Mike Vanderjagt. He's made 86 percent of his field goal attempts over 10 seasons and went 12 for 12 last year, plus 2 for 2 in the playoffs, with New England.
Gano, by contrast, ranked last in the league this year, making only 69 percent (24 for 35).
"When you look at Graham's percentages last year, he knows there's going to be competition," Shanahan said. "He's got to perform. If not, someone's going to take his spot."
Graham can't practice until Thursday under the NFL's post-lockout rules.
Also Monday, free agent cornerback Phillip Buchanon announced on Twitter he was "on his way" back to re-sign with the Redskins. The veteran was mostly used as a nickel cornerback for the last year and will likely fill the same role this season behind starters DeAngelo Hall and new acquisition Josh Wilson.
The Redskins also signed five undrafted rookies: Villanova defensive lineman Thomas Weaver, Michigan safety Davonte Shannon, Wisconsin receiver Isaac Anderson, Buffalo linebacker Obi Ezeh and Richmond linebacker Eric McBride.
