Toppled crane part blocks Route 7 during evening rush
August 22, 2011 - 05:00 pm
Virginia Department of Transportation is investigating why the boom on one of its cranes toppled around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. The crane is used to drive piles for construction projects.
It fell onto a Route 7 Westbound overpass that crosses over the Beltway. All lanes of Route 7 West were blocked at I-495.
VDOT had to temporarily close Route 7 in both directions to bring in the equipment needed to move the boom out of the way.
I-495 North ramps were closed in both directions to Route 7, as well as both westbound lanes on Route 7.
Traffic was directed onto I-495 North and Chain Bridge Road. Motorists faced delays into the evening's rush period. Roads were reopened by 7:30 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation said.
