Runner attacked on Old Georgetown Road
Police are searching for a man who groped a female jogger early Monday morning and are reminding joggers to take precautions when running in the twilight or at night.
An unknown suspect grabbed a 24-year-old woman who was running on Old Georgetown Road Monday morning. The woman was listening to music on her MP3 player.
Montgomery County police said the suspect grabbed the victim at about 5:50 a.m. between Kingswood Road and Lone Oak Drive.
“He groped her and in the process of that she struggled to get away from him, that's when the car came by and the suspect ran in the other direction,” said Janelle Smith of the Montgomery County police. The suspect fled after a vehicle approached.
The victim was not hurt, but shaken up. She went home immediately and called police. Police say the suspect is a black male, 30-40 years old, 5'08", weighing approximately 150 pounds. He was wearing a cream-colored shirt, light-colored pants, and a tan winter hat.
Anne Spera lives a block from the attack and has 16- and 19-year-old daughters who run.
“I don't think kids understand how their world shrinks when they have something like that on, they aren't visually aware because they are looking where they are running and they can't hear anything,” Spera worries.
“That's terrifying, I'm definitely going to watch myself when I'm running,” said her daughter Michelle.
Michelle Spera plans to take the family dog next time she jogs Old Georgetown Road.
“Especially on a main road, its really scary, I wouldn't run any more now that I've heard about this,” said Alexandra Gilson.
Police recommend joggers turn down music they’re listening to, especially when running in the dark. They recommend running during daytime, if possible, or with someone.
