Sterling apartment explosion causes fire, no injuries
Twenty-one Sterling residents were displaced Thursday morning after an explosion in a third-story apartment caused a fire and damage to their residential building.
The explosion happened at an apartment building at 46101 Ingomar Terrace. Responding units found light smoke coming from the building, which had significant exterior damage. Fire crews put out hot spots, but the building's residential sprinkler system had extinguished most of the fire by the time they had arrived.
An investigation determined that a gas leak from a shifted water heater caused the explosion. The damage is valued at about $300,000.
No one was injured in the incident. Eleven of the 16 units in the building were affected. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced.
