Mario Amaro accused of molesting girl at Montgomery County thrift store
Montgomery County police arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl at a thrift store.
Police arrested Mario Amaro, who is accused of sexually assaulting a girl at the Unique Thrift Store in the 12000 block of Veirs Mill Road on Aug. 1. The store is a family-oriented business where parents shop with their children.
The victim was shopping with her family at the store when she became separated from her family. The suspect then approached her and inappropriately touched her over her clothes, police said.
The girl tried to get away but the suspect touched her again inappropriately, police said. The victim then ran away and hid inside a clothing rack.
"Of course it's scary", said Silvia Perez, who was shopping with her two-year-old daughter Camille. "I hate people do something like that to the children. It's not normal.”
Leslie Harvey says parents now have to be more watchful than ever. "As a parent, it's your responsibility to hold on to your child. It's the world we live in", she says.
Authorities say Amaro tried to cover his tracks by ducking into a restroom.
"He put on another shirt over the original shirt he was wearing, and then exited the restroom in an attempt to conceal his identity", said Montgomery County Police Officer Janelle Smith.
The girl was not physically harmed, police say.
