Mayor Vincent Gray confirmed the departure of former Army Secretary Togo D. West Jr. on Monday.

West was nominated in 2010 by former Mayor Adrian Fenty to serve at an agency that had developed a reputation for slow election returns and flawed equipment. His departure follows the one by executive director Rokey Suleman II, who unexpectedly resigned last month.

Gray will likely have to move quickly to fill the vacancies as the city is preparing for primary elections in April.

Gray's administration says it was West's decision to resign. It is not clear when he will officially leave his position.
