Fire investigators say a propane gas leak is what caused a house to explode Tuesday afternoon in California, Md., injuring two people inside.

The leak, located in a crawl space pipe, allowed the gas to collect and explode, officials say, but it’s still unclear what ignited the gas.

About 1:30 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a loud boom coming from a two-story home in the 45900 block of Patuxent Lane in California, Maryland, according to Deputy State Fire Marshals.

Bystanders quickly looked for any occupants and helped two people from the home.

Responding officials found a side of the single-family home had been blown away and a fire burning.

Carol Andrews, 67, and Robert Andrews, 80, were both taken to St. Mary's Hospital Center for treatment. Robert was released with no injuries and Carol was transferred to Washington Hospital Center for burn injuries.

Debris from the explosion has been found as far as 100 feet away. Damages to the home and its contents are estimated at $400,000.
