Va State Police: Agency Twitter account was fake
August 1, 2011 - 11:11 am
ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A Twitter account that appeared to be run by the Virginia State Police looked real but the agency says it was a fake.
Spokeswoman Corinne Geller tells The Roanoke Times that the social networking website suspended the Twitter account called (at)VaStatePolice after the agency requested its removal.
Geller says a reporter's question drew the agency's attention to the bogus account. She says it looked legitimate but it wasn't. Most of its postings linked to real state police news releases.
Geller says she doesn't know who ran the account, which had nearly 130 followers.
The Virginia State Police has a Facebook page but it doesn't have a Twitter account.
