Violent crime dropped by 6% in Md. last year

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Martin O'Malley is announcing a 6 percent drop in violent crime in Maryland.

Crime dropped by 6% in Md. last year, according to Maryland police.

O'Malley released the 2010 year-end crime data on Wednesday. It is compiled by the Maryland State Police and submitted to the FBI for use in the national crime statistics report.

The data shows homicides dropped 3.2 percent in 2010, with 14 fewer people murdered last year in Maryland than the year before.

The data also shows that robberies and motor vehicle deaths are down about 8 percent.

The O'Malley administration says the declines come at a time when state and local law enforcement agencies are increasing their use of technology and information sharing.

O'Malley says use of DNA has resulted in the arrests of 290 criminals since 2007.
