If you've been thinking about adopting a new pet, August could be your best time to do it.
The Washington Humane Society has announced a 50 percent discount on pet adoption fees on 100-degree days and a waiving of fees for adopting pit bulls through August 31.
"We take in hundreds of animals a month, and we have seen especially high intake numbers during this hot summer season," said Stephanie Shain, Chief Operating Officer, Washington Humane Society. "We are calling on the community to open their hearts and homes to the many deserving animals who are seeking adoption, and we hope to encourage them to make the move to find their perfect match this month."
WHS says it wants to encourage responsible pet guardianship and to help restore the reputation of pit bulls, a misunderstood breed.
From WHS: The public can meet adoptable WHS animals at events throughout the community or visit WHS shelters at 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW and the DC Animal Care and Control Facility operated by WHS at 1201 New York Avenue, NE. This month, the community is invited to bi-weekly Meow Mixers at the WHS Behavior & Learning Center (7315 Georgia Avenue, NW), Yappy Hours at neighborhood establishments, including Canines on the Courtyard at the Washington Hilton, and to pet-friendly venues hosting WHS animals across the DC area. A full calendar of activities can be found on the WHS website.
