Weekend closures on Chain Bridge begins Friday night
August 19, 2011 - 05:12 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Weekend closures are coming for the westernmost of the Potomac River bridges into Washington.
The Chain Bridge will close at 8 p.m. Friday to allow District of Columbia transportation crews to conduct structural repairs under the bridge deck.
The bridge will reopen Monday at 5 a.m. The work is scheduled to continue through mid-December, although the bridge will not be closed every weekend. It will be open next weekend for the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial, as well as on Labor Day weekend.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes including the Key, Roosevelt, Memorial and 14th Street bridges. The Chain Bridge will also be closed to cyclists and pedestrians.
