Alexandria seeks new town crier
September 1, 2011 - 06:49 am
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - If you can belt out an official proclamation larded with cries of "whereas" and "oyez," and you aren't easily ruffled by unfurling parchment, the city of Alexandria may have a job for you.
The city is seeking a new town crier, and tryouts will be held Thursday night at the city's Lloyd House. A second tryout will be held on Sept. 7.
The volunteer position was last held by William North-Rudin, who served for five years before moving out of state.
The city says applicants should have a powerful but clear voice, a strong sense of civic pride, and a willingness to make public appearances in early 19th-century attire. The city also wants its crier to have a sense of humor, and a love of children, parades and tourists.
