It's also fast. Very fast.

For fans of Le Mans car racing it's a lot of fun.

“It's amazing,” said Baltimore resident Jason Yu. “It's a pretty fast - you don't think it is that quick but it is.”

People crowded the fences as the drivers tested out the track. Grand Prix racing are usually associated with Europe, but it's gaining traction in the U.S.

The Baltimore Grand Prix runs along the Inner Harbor and right through downtown. It runs for three days, beginning Friday, but several of the roads on the course were already closed to traffic on Thursday.

“We're all really happy in Baltimore to finally have something a little more international here in the city,” said Nina Santos, a Baltimore resident.

Getting so close to these souped-up cars and witnessing the speed and skill of the drivers is something Baltimoreans find surprising yet thrilling.

Just for the test runs people crowded around the track. The actual races are expected to draw thousands of people from across the region.

“I love cars and I want to see them here on the streets,” said Brian Dresner, a D.C. resident.
