Biden touts potential billions of funding for police departments
Vice President Joe Biden pushed for the President's Jobs Bill Thursday, saying it would put more police officers on city streets.
Three local police departments have received federal funding Thursday to add officers.
Alexandria will receive more than $850,000 to hire four officers, the Metropolitan Police Department will get more than $1 million to hire six, and the City of Annapolis will get more than $900,000 to bring in five new officers.
“We owe you every tool that's available not only to keep the community safe but to keep you safe,” Biden told members of the Alexandria Police Department.
Alexandria Chief Earl Cook applied for six positions but says he’s happy they got four. He says this will help in the rebuilding process.
“If we don't recover and replenish right now we're worried for the coming years so for Alexandria we're proud to get the grant,” Cook said.
While at the city's new police headquarters, Biden also pushed for the president's job plan, which could put more officers on the street. If passed, the bill would provide an additional $5 billion for public safety jobs nationwide, including $4 billion in police hiring grants.
The plan also calls for $10 billion to develop a clear channel for first responders to communicate with each other. Biden suggested the White House may be willing to compromise with Republicans who oppose the plan.
“There may be a better way, we're open, but we're not open to saying status quo,” he said.
