September 21, 2011 - 05:05 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Thursday is Car-Free Day and organizers in the Washington area say more than 9,000 people have pledged to participate.
Car Free Day is held worldwide every Sept. 22. Organizers are encouraging people to walk, bike, use mass transit, work at home or find other alternatives to cars.
Car Free Day events are being held throughout the area, including free shuttle rides in Frederick County, and giveaways and prize drawings at Montgomery County Metrorail stations. In Virginia, state officials are celebrating their fourth annual Try Transit Week this week.
