Fairfax County approves 2 percent raise for employees
September 14, 2011 - 09:36 am
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has voted to raise the pay of county employees by 2 percent, the first such boost in three years.
The board voted unanimously Tuesday for the raise, which takes effect on Sept. 24. The county has about 11,000 employees.
The board had set aside money earlier this year to give employees a 1.5 percent raise, but was able to go above that rate due to better-than-expected sales tax revenue, more cost-cutting by agencies and other unexpected savings.
The board also agreed Tuesday to put $29 million in a reserve fund to prepare for another anticipated budget gap next year and the likelihood of having to pay for damage from recent flooding.
