Fort Belvoir 29th Infantry Division prepares for deployment to Afghanistan
The Fort Belvoir-based 29th Infantry Division, which includes over 60 National Guardsmen from Virginia and Maryland, will be honored today as they prepare to deploy to Afghanistan.
Five of the soldiers being dispatched are from Northern Virginia. The division will take over for a group of Maryland and Virginia Guardsmen who began this round of active duty last November.
The Security Year Partnering mission will join the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan to help train and facilitate the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police.
Soldiers from the 29th Infantry Division last deployed overseas in 2006, when they were sent on peace-keeping duty in Kosovo.
