Georgetown law campus on lock-down
A series of confusions led to a major scare at Georgetown Law Center Friday afternoon.
The incident started at about 1 p.m., when police received a call that a gunman was seen on Capitol Hill. MPD and Capitol Hill police searched the area but found no armed person.
At about the same time, police received a separate call regarding a man causing a disturbance near the Rayburn building. Police found the man and detained him.
Unrelated to the earlier events, police say a handgun was discovered near a tree on the Capitol Hill grounds.
At some point, Georgetown University sent out an alert to law students declaring that an armed gunman was seen on Capitol Hill, police said.
Police say someone from the law school campus, located at 600 New Jersey Avenue, NW, called MPD to report that an armed man was seen on campus.
Students were urged to stay indoors and away from windows while police swarmed the area but found nothing.
At about 1:40 p.m., police determined that there was no threat on the campus and declared the area safe.
