Hillary Clinton: U.S. cannot afford to live in fear
September 9, 2011 - 09:56 am
NEW YORK (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the United States cannot afford to live in fear, sacrifice its values, or "pull back from the world."
She says America is "determined not to let the specter of terrorism darken the national character."
Excerpts were released Friday prior to Clinton's speech at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan.
She says that before 9/11, "America did not adapt quickly enough to new and different kinds of threats."
Clinton says it is "imperative that we not make that mistake again."
Her visit comes amid heightened security due to a terror threat, just before the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The United Nations is holding a conference on terrorism on Sept. 19.
