WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro says it has a problem with bicycles being abandoned at public racks, so the transit agency is being forced to collect them and destroy them.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel tells The Washington Examiner (http://bit.ly/oBCRCH) that crews have been called out 12 times this year to removed one or more bicycles. He, however, didn't provide an exact number of how many bikes have been confiscated.

Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn says the transit agency is considering adding more video cameras in area where bikes are parked.

He also says that Metro is talking to officials in the District of Columbia because the city has very few thefts from its public bike racks.

Last year, 280 bikes were reported stolen at the agency.
