WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro says it will close the south entrance of the Dupont Circle station early next year in order to replace three escalators.

Metro General Manager Richard Sales said Thursday that the entrance could be closed for as long as one year. Nearly 23,000 people use the Dupont Circle station daily, and its escalators often have problems.

Riders, once the entrance is closed, will have to get into the station from Q Street.

The $12 million project is part of a larger effort to replace escalators in the rail system and will be a project similar to the one at the Foggy Bottom station, where three escalators are also being replaced.
