A George Washington graduate student and Afghanistan veteran killed during a dispute at a McDonald's may have died in a different scenario than first described, police said Friday.

Patrick Casey died after an incident last week, according to a statement by University President Steven Knapp posted on the GW website.

The 33-year-old was earning a master’s degree at the Elliott School of International Affairs. He had just returned from a year-long deployment to Afghanistan.

His parents said Casey died after he tried to prevent a dispute at a McDonald’s at 1916 M Street.

On Friday, police said Casey had been drinking prior to the incident. Police also said Casey had been bothering other patrons inside the restaurant.

Casey then got into a confrontation with another group. They moved the altercation outside. While outside the McDonald's, Casey blocked the door to the restaurant and prevented people from entering, police said.

During the altercation, one of the men in the challenging group fell to the ground, followed by Casey. It’s unclear if the two fell from punching or shoving, police said.

Casey was killed in the incident.

No one is facing charges in connection with the death.
