LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - The Loudoun County Sheriff's Department has released the name of a deputy who was struck by a vehicle, and the driver who hit the deputy is facing charges.

Capt. Brian Courneya was hit by a Jeep Cherokee early Monday while walking in the median of Route 7 in Leesburg. Minutes earlier, the department says Courneya hit a deer with his county-issued vehicle. He activated his emergency lights and pulled over, then left the car to try to find the injured deer.

The department says the Jeep was driven by Craig Trout of Lovettsville. Authorities say Trout came upon slow-moving traffic in the right lane and swerved to avoid it, crossing into the median and striking Courneya.

The deputy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Trout has been charged with reckless driving.
