The principal of Colonial Forge High School has resigned after turmoil about the suspension of a student who crashed a football game in a banana man costume.

The school division announced Tuesday that principal Karen Spillman resigned, Fredericksburg.com reports.

Assistant Superintendent Lisa Martin will head the school until an interim principal is assigned. The site reports that around 30 teachers from the school came to a Stafford County School Board meeting to support the embattled principal.

Spillman wanted to suspend sophomore Bryan Thompson, 14, for the rest of the school year after he ran onto Colonial Forge's football field in a banana costume during half-time at a Sept. 16 game.

Stafford Schools Superintendent Randy Bridges later apologized for the school's response.

Some students at Colonial Forge High School wore yellow "Free Banana Man" T-shirts to protest 14-year-old Thompson's suspension.

The student returned to school earlier this week after his suspension was lifted.
