A man suspected of shooting at an off-duty Prince George's County Police sergeant is under arrest in Connecticut.

James H. Hill, III, of New Haven, Conn., allegedly fled from a police officer in his personal car, firing multiple times at the cop from the car.

He is charged with attempted second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and first-degree assault, Maryland State Police said in a news release.

The off-duty Prince George's County Police sergeant was driving in his personal car around 2:30 a.m. Thursday when he noticed a speeding car. The light-colored Audi with Connecticut tags was driving erratically with its lights off.

He called Maryland State Police and said he was following the car on the outer loop of I-495 near Georgia Avenue, and followed it onto northbound I-270.

The sergeant said someone in the Audi held a handgun out the window and fired multiple times at him. He kept following the car, which after getting on and off the highway eventually stopped on a ramp leading onto 270, where someone again fired at the sergeant.

The officer eventually lost sight of the car, but remembered a license plate number. Neither he nor his car was struck.

Police in Connecticut were familiar with the suspect and arrested him Thursday afternoon. The Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office is working to extradite Hill to Maryland.
