Darryl Willard arrested for shooting transgender woman in SE
D.C. police arrested a man in connection with the shooting of a transgender woman in Southeast.
About 1:50 a.m. Monday, a woman was shot in the 2600 block of Savannah Street SE, according to an official with the Maryland Police Dept.
The woman walked to the Seventh District Police Station at 2455 Alabama Ave SE and reported that she had been shot in the neck.
She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
On Tuesday, Darryl Willard, 20, of Northeast D.C., surrendered at the First District Police headquarters. He was charged with assault with intent to kill while armed.
The Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit responded to the scene to help detectives in their investigation.
In addition to the recent shootings, there have been at least seven muggings and one rape of a transgender person in the past three weeks.
Police said they will not tolerate the crimes against the transgender community.
