Ulysses Currie, Maryland lawmaker, trial begins in Maryland

BALTIMORE (AP) - A jury has been chosen for the federal case against a Maryland state lawmaker accused of using his influence to benefit a grocery store chain for which he worked as a consultant.
The jury was selected Monday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore for the trial of Sen. Ulysses Currie.
Prosecutors allege that after the Prince George's County Democrat became chairman of the committee that steers state spending, he was put on the payroll of Shoppers Food Warehouse and agreed to use his office to benefit the chain.
At a hearing last week, attorneys for Currie said he was being treated for cancer and given medication that made him "fuzzy" during an FBI investigation three years ago.
The trial could last several weeks.
