University of Maryland explosion in chemistry building reported
Prince George’s authorities are reporting that there was an explosion at a chemistry building at the University of Maryland.
Authorities evacuated the chemistry building. The building was reopened around 4:30 p.m., according to a message sent from the University of Maryland Twitter account.
Authorities said the explosion occurred when two chemicals, nitrogen and sulphur acid, were combined. It’s unknown if additional chemicals were involved, but combining nitrogen and sulfur acid doesn’t usually lead to explosions, authorities said.
The two students suffered first and second degree chemical burns and superficial cuts on their bodies. They were taken to a local hospital.
