10 Army airmen from WWII buried at Arlington
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Remains of 10 Army airmen have been buried at Arlington National Cemetery following their recovery from a German crash site.
The remains were buried in a single casket Wednesday with full military honors.
The airmen were carrying out a bombing mission over Berlin in 1944 when their plane crashed.
According to the Pentagon, in 2003 a German national located the crash site and discovered human remains. U.S. military teams excavated the site in 2005 and 2007 and found additional remains and ID tags that matched the airmen. DNA analyses were also conducted.
At the end of World War II, the U.S. government was unable to identify and recover the remains of about 79,000 Americans - nearly 20 percent of all who were killed. More than 73,000 remain unaccounted for.
