Alexandria joins Capital Bikeshare program
Alexandria bike riders will now get to use the popular Capital Bikeshare program. The Alexandria City Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday to authorize the city to join the Capital Bikeshare network.
A pilot program with six bikeshare stations will mark the beginning. The Alexandria Bikeshare network is expected to be in place by the spring/summer of 2012, the city said in a news release.
The Old Town and Carlyle areas will be the first to reap the benefits of the deal, with $400,000 of existing federal funds going toward the bikeshare pilot program there.
A round of groups including the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the Environmental Policy Commission, the Del Ray Citizens Association, and the Transportation Commission, supported the program.
