Attempted rape in Silver Spring
Updated: October 4, 2011 - 05:43 pm
Police have released a computer sketch of the suspect who broke into a woman’s Silver Spring house and attempted to rape her. The sketch is based on witness description, police say.
Police say the 56-year-old female victim was in her kitchen Sunday evening when she heard the side screen door opening. A man approached her from behind, threw her down on to the kitchen floor and attempted to undress her. She struggled against the intruder, and he fled out the side door of the residence, police say.
Police were called shortly before 10:30 p.m. They said the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. in a home on Saybrook Avenue.
“I love our neighborhood, I think its usually very safe,” said Rose McConnell. “Neighbors take care of each other but I think maybe we need a little more police presence.”
Detectives interviewed the victim last night and created the suspect image based on her description. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, about 5’6” tall, weighing approximately 185 pounds. He appeared to be 35-42 years of age and was wearing a gray long-sleeve shirt and black jeans.
“It is unusual, we don't see it a lot but this is just a reminder to citizens to make sure your doors are locked even when you're home,” said Officer Janelle Smith of the Montgomery County Police.
The composite is being passed around the neighborhood via a community listserv. Larrissa Stroute lives near the victim and says she doesn’t recognize the man but knows people will be watching.
“I think there's enough of us on the street that we can sort of see what's going on,” Stroute said.
