Census: D.C. area a big draw for relocating young adults

WASHINGTON (AP) - New Census figures show the Washington area is among the top destinations in the nation for young adults who choose to relocate.

The figures released Thursday show that the District of Columbia and the Maryland and Virginia suburbs gained about 7,000 people ages 25 to 34 in each of the past three years.

The Washington Post reports that's the sixth-highest rate in the nation, just behind Austin, Texas, and ahead of Portland, Ore.

The numbers mark a dramatic shift from before the 2008 recession, when the area was losing about 8,000 young adults per year.

William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, says the economy is largely responsible for the shift. But he also says Washington is benefiting from a reputation as a cool place to live.
