Columbus Day weekend closures planned
Planning to head to downtown D.C. this Columbus Day weekend? Be prepared for road and Metro closures ahead of several big events planned in the area.
Major roads like Constitution and Pennsylvania avenues will be shut down through out the next two days. All lanes on Route 110 and Boundary Channel Drive will be closed from 5:30 in the morning until 1:30 Sunday afternoon. Drivers should also look out for rolling shutdowns on Arlington Memorial Bridge.
In addition, Metro will be conducting track work. Starting 10 p.m. Friday, three Metro stations – Shaw, U Street and Columbia Heights – on the Green and Yellow lines will be closed as crews work to complete track repairs recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board. Normal service will resume Tuesday morning.
Metro says buses will replace trains on portions of the Green, Yellow and Orange lines. Riders are advised to add about 30 minutes to their commute time.
For the Taste of DC, the following roads will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Tuesday:
Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from 9th Street to 14th Street
10th Street, NW from E Street to Constitution Avenue
11th Street, NW from E Street to Pennsylvania Avenue
12th Street, NW from E Street to Constitution Avenue
13th Street, NW from E Street to Pennsylvania Avenue
For the Army Ten Miler on Sunday, streets along the race route will be closed intermittently during the race beginning at about 7:30 a.m.
The race route starts along Washington Boulevard (Route 27) in Arlington, Va., and progress across the Arlington Memorial Bridge into the District of Columbia. Runners take the following route:
Crossing the Arlington Memorial Bridge around Lincoln Circle to Henry Bacon Drive
East on Constitution Avenue, NW
North on 19th Street, NW
West on Virginia Avenue, NW
South on Rock Creek Parkway, NW to Ohio Drive, SW
East on Independence Avenue, SW (runners will take the Westbound side)
Northeast on Maryland Avenue, SW
South on 1st Street, NW (crossing Peace Circle and Garfield Circle)
West on Independence Avenue, SW (runners will stay on the left side)
South on 14th Street, NW to Interstate 395
All streets should reopen by 12 p.m.
For the Festa Italiana on Sunday, some streets will be closed between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Those are:
3rd Street at G street, NW with no southbound traffic on 3rd Street
F Street at 4th Street, NW with no traffic on F Street
3rd Street between 1-395 Ramp and G Street, NW with no traffic North on 3rd Street
On Monday, the U.S. Army Convention starts at the the Washington Convention Center. L Street will be closed between 7th and 9th Streets, NW until Wednesday.
