WASHINGTON (AP) - The District of Columbia is preparing to build underground stormwater and sewage tunnels in an effort to end polluted discharges into waterways.

Officials with the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority are to break ground next week on the $2.6 billion project.

The city will build two tunnels. The Anacostia tunnel will extend from the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant along the Anacostia River to near RFK Stadium. The second tunnel will run underground along M Street southeast between 9th and 14th streets.

The Washington Post reports the pipes will retain stormwater from heavy rains so it can be treated to remove filth before being released into the Anacostia and Potomac rivers, and Rock Creek.
