Davey Johnson returning to Nationals for 2012 season

Davey Johnson is returning to the dugout for the Washington Nationals in 2012, the club announced Monday.

The Nationals exercised their club option to retain Johnson for next season after management decided it was in the best interest of the team, general manager Mike Rizzo said in a statement.

"His baseball acumen coupled with a proper off-season of planning, including a full regiment of Spring Training, should put our players in a position to succeed in 2012," Rizzo said.

Johnson took over on June 27 after the mid-season resignation of former manager Jim Riggleman and went 40-43 to finish the season, including winning 15 of their final 20 games.

The Nationals 3rd place finish in the N.L. East was the club's highest since moving to Washington in 2005.

Johnson, the 1997 American League Manager of the Year, boasts a 1188-931 record in 15 seasons of MLB service, managing the Dodges, Orioles, Reds and Mets before landing in D.C.
