D.C. Council rejects emergency ethics bill
WASHINGTON (AP) - The D.C. Council has rejected a proposal to set up an emergency ethics reform task force.
Councilmembers voted 12-1 against the proposal. Its sponsor, Councilmember Vincent Orange, was the only "yes" vote.
Several councilmembers spoke at Tuesday's meeting about the need to take a deliberate and comprehensive approach to ethics reform that includes input from the public. Ethics reform has been a key issue this year with several members facing criticism for ethical lapses. But Councilmember Jack Evans said emergency legislation is the wrong way to tackle the emotional issue.
Several bills have been introduced, and Councilmember Muriel Bowser plans to use her government reform committee to come up with a comprehensive proposal.
