DC removes $19 cap on cab fares

WASHINGTON (AP) - Residents and visitors to the nation's capital are about to pay more for some cab rides.
WTOP-FM reports that the District of Columbia Taxicab Commission announced plans this week to remove the $19 cap on fares. That means the meter will keep running until the ride is over, no matter the length.
The fare cap did not include surcharges for extra bags and passengers or a $1 gas surcharge, which is scheduled to remain in place through mid-November.
The new rules also mean changes for cab rides from the district into Maryland or Virginia. Now, the meter will keep running at the same rate for those rides as for those entirely within the district.
