Deputy shoots, kills man in St. Mary's County
Updated: October 21, 2011 - 06:39 pm
St. Mary's County Police say the man one of their deputies shot and killed on Thursday was aggressive toward officers and his family before the shooting occurred.
Police say that 38-year-old Kotrell Omar Newsome of Lexington Park had to be Tasered, but when that and other methods of restraint were ineffective at subduing him, police fired at the suspect.
Authorites say that deputies responded to a home in the 48000 block of Spinnaker Circle in Lexington Park for a domestic dispute. The deputy saw that the victim was injured and attempted to arrest the suspect, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
A violent struggle ensued between the deputy and Newsome, during which the deputy discharged his firearm.
The deputy suffered non-incapacitating injuries. The investigation is continuing.
